Bunting, Jabez

Bunting, Jabez
(1779–1858)
   Denomination Leader.
Bunting was born in Manchester, and was ordained to the Methodist ministry in 1799. He quickly became powerful within the movement; he was four times President of the Methodist Conference; he was President of the first Wesleyan Theological College at Hoxton and he was secretary of the Wesleyan Missionary Society for eighteen years. Although his tendency to centralise power was distrusted by many older members of the society, his genius for organisation was undisputed. It was largely through his efforts that Methodism became the influential Church that it is today.
